Apple has done it again. Just like with the previous generation, I wasn’t planning to review the new AirPods Pro 3 this September—life was busy, and there were other tech releases to cover. But Apple sent me their latest AirPods Pro, and naturally, the first thing I did was take them on a flight. After spending real-world time with them, I can confidently say these are a major step up from the AirPods Pro 2.
Design & Fit: Small Changes, Big Impact
At first glance, the AirPods Pro 3 look nearly identical to their predecessors. However, subtle design tweaks make a huge difference in comfort and fit.
- New Ear Tip Design: The ear tips now have a small foam insert inside the silicone tip, combining the comfort of silicone with the adaptive seal of foam. This improves fit and reduces the chances of earbuds falling out. Plus, Apple introduced a double extra-small size, giving users five sizes to choose from.
- Better Stay-In-Ear Fit: Thanks to a slightly different insertion angle and redesigned tips, these are the first AirPods that have stayed in my ears consistently.
For workouts, the Powerbeats Pro still take the crown because of the over-ear hook, but for daily walking and commuting, the AirPods Pro 3 are excellent.
Sound Quality: Rich, Crisp, and Improved
Apple has refined the audio experience with this generation:
- Fuller Sound: Expect stronger bass and low-end response while maintaining clear mids and bright highs.
- Louder Volume with Minimal Distortion: The AirPods Pro 3 can reach higher volumes without sacrificing clarity.
- Redesigned Interior: Slightly larger vents allow for better airflow, likely contributing to the improved bass performance.
Back-to-back testing with the second-gen AirPods shows a noticeable improvement. The new combination of ear tip foam and angle ensures a secure seal, enhancing sound quality and noise isolation.
Active Noise Cancellation & Transparency Mode
Apple claims the AirPods Pro 3 offer the “world’s best Active Noise Cancellation,” and I’m inclined to agree.
- Twice the ANC of the Previous Generation: New ear tips, better seal, larger vents, and improved software tuning deliver impressive noise cancellation.
- Plane-Ready: On a flight, the white noise was almost completely eliminated, letting me immerse myself in music or movies.
- Transparency Mode: Works even better than before, allowing conversational awareness without removing the earbuds.
Compared to competitors like the Bose QC Ultra 2, Sony WF-1000XM5, and Galaxy Buds 3 Pro, Apple’s latest earbuds hold their own in both comfort and noise cancellation.
Durability & Battery Life
- IP57 Rated: These earbuds and their case are now dust and water resistant. Perfect for heavy rain, sweat, and accidental spills.
- Longer Battery Life: Up to 8 hours with ANC on, up from 6, and up to 10 hours in transparency mode.
Apple removed the pairing button on the case; manual pairing now requires a double-tap on the front. A next-generation Ultra Wideband chip allows for precise location tracking up to 50% further away.
New Features: Heart Rate Monitoring & Live Translation
- Heart Rate Monitor: Integrated sensors measure your heart rate during workouts and sync seamlessly with the Apple Fitness app.
- Live Translation: Powered by Apple Intelligence, you can translate languages offline via your AirPods Pro 3, making them handy for international travel or conversations.
Charging & Accessories
Apple no longer includes a USB-C cable in the box, assuming most users already have compatible chargers from iPhones, Apple Watches, or MagSafe devices. The case itself is slightly taller and thicker to accommodate the new design.
For added protection and customization, Dbrand’s Grip Case is a great accessory. Matte black, custom designs, or tactical-style cases can make your AirPods Pro 3 stand out while protecting them from scratches and drops.
Final Thoughts
AirPods Pro 3 are a well-rounded upgrade:
- Better Fit – Ear tips and new angle keep them secure all day.
- Better Sound – Stronger bass, clearer mids, and bright highs.
- Better ANC – World-class noise cancellation.
- Durable – IP57 rating for dust, water, and sweat.
- Longer Battery Life – Eight hours with ANC, ten hours with transparency mode.
Whether you’re an all-day AirPods user or someone who occasionally pops them in, the AirPods Pro 3 deliver exceptional performance. For iPhone users, these earbuds truly have no weak spots.
